NCServes Central Carolina and GreeNest step up to help veteran during Covid-19.

As many Americans continue to experience difficulties mentality, physically, and financially surrounding COVID-19, the USO of North Carolina and NCServes Central Carolina continue to provide support for service members and families in need.

In a recent submission to the NCServes Network, a disabled veteran who served four and half years during the Persian Gulf War filed a claim for assistance. Moving into a new two-bedroom apartment with his two daughters, finding reasonably priced furniture and a company that could deliver the furniture on short notice during COVID-19 social distancing restrictions became an impossible task.

“I was having trouble searching for furniture with all of the stores being closed due to COVID-19. I’m not very good at online shopping and didn’t know where to begin to look for reasonably priced furniture and a company that could fill an immediate order,” said the veteran, who wishes to remain anonymous.

“I knew about NCServes Central Carolina and the assistance they offer veterans so I reached out to see what they could they do,” added the veteran and father of two.

Jessica Salinas, a Community Coordinator at NCServes Central Carolina, reached out within 24 hours of receiving the assistance request to further support the veteran. She walked him through a step-by-step process of selecting pieces of furniture for him and his daughters through an online store owned by GreeNest.

GreeNest is a non-profit organization providing ‘nesting material’ for those moving out of crisis situations into sustainable housing. GreeNest accepts donations of gently used furniture and household items and works with case-managed programs such as NCServes Central Carolina to support those in need.

Together, both organizations were able to use some of their ‘veteran funds’ to help minimize the cost of the purchase of the furniture for this order. When customers shop for furniture and appliances at Greenest, they are given the option to round up and donate for future shoppers who need veteran’s assistance such as this request.

Through the combined efforts of the USO of NC, NCServes Central Carolina and Greenest, we were able to assist one of our veteran service members in furnishing his new home for his family quickly, in what could of resulted in months of waiting for an online order to be filled and delivered.

If you are a veteran, active duty, or military affiliated family member in need of support, assistance, or guidance please call or file a claim on the NCServes Central Carolina website
