Western Governor's University working on scholarship with USO of NC
Military families make daily sacrifices for the nation’s safety. One college believes missing out on higher education shouldn’t be one of them.
Western Governor’s University teamed up with the USO to create a scholarship available to any member of the military community.
“I’m a military brat and a military spouse and I went through many different universities through my educational career,” said Dr. Anna Mezzaroba, who teaches at WGU.
For Mezzaroba, the journey to a doctorate degree took 12 years, mostly because the word “moving” is embedded into a military member’s vocabulary.
“Having an education for me changed many opportunities,” Mezzaroba said. “As a military spouse, it’s limited. you PCS (Permanent Change of Station), you move, and you start over.”
With moving comes uprooting and, sometimes, having to start schooling from scratch. But not for students at Western Governor’s University.
“WGU is an ideal placement for anyone who is a highly mobile individual,” especially our active duty military members,“ Mezzaroba said.
A primarily online college, WGU is helping 3,100 students get a more flexible education — 18% of those students being military — and now the college is going a step further.
"So WGU North Carolina and the USO North Carolina have done a partnership,” Mezzaroba said. “Chancellor Catherine Tuitt and John Falkenbury have developed this military service scholarship.”
It’s a scholarship worth $2,500 that any active duty military members and their families can apply. But you don’t have to be a student at WGU to apply for the scholarship. The deadline is May 31.
“It’s an exciting opportunity for you to be able to advance your education,” said Amy Leuschke, Coastal Area Director for USO. “College is expensive and for us to help eliminate that cost is really exciting.”
