Harris Teeter and the USO of North Carolina team up to support military families
Harris Teeter and the USO of North Carolina to host a ribbon cutting ceremony at the USO of NC Charlotte Center for Harris Teeter’s new canteen
Charlotte, NC – On any given day, 300 to 400 service members and military families visit USO of North Carolina center at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. They’re traveling to new duty stations, visiting family far away and sometimes heading overseas for deployments. Harris Teeter is teaming up with the USO of North Carolina to open canteens at USO of North Carolina airport centers, providing service members and their families with complementary snacks and drinks.
On May 22, at 8:45 a.m. at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport USO of NC Center, Harris Teeter and the USO of NC will host a ribbon cutting for the first Harris Teeter canteen opening in a USO of North Carolina airport center. For the first time, the canteen will be funded by a donation from Harris Teeter as part of Harris Teeter’s Support Our Troops campaign for the USO.
In 2016, Harris Teeter associates and shoppers donated more than $469,000 to USO of North Carolina; this year, USO of North Carolina is hoping to help Harris Teeter donate more than $575,000. Patrons can donate one, three or five dollars during checkout at any Harris Teeter store through May 31.
“On average our airport centers spend around $50,000 to $55,000 a year in food and drinks that are complementary to our service members and their families,” said John Falkenbury, president of the USO of North Carolina. “This donation is a huge budget relief, and will allow us to reallocate those funds toward our critical resiliency transition and other health and human service programs. We cannot thank Harris Teeter enough for their continued support of our service members, their families and our mission.”
The donation to the canteen will come in the form of gift cards, which will allow the USO of NC’s area directors to purchase snacks and drinks as needed for the canteens. An additional canteen will open at the USO of North Carolina Raleigh-Durham Airport center in the coming weeks.
“Harris Teeter is proud to partner with the USO to show support of our brave servicemen and women, as well as their families,” said Danna Robinson, communication manager for Harris Teeter. “We are thankful for the involvement of our valued associates and loyal shoppers who continuously support the good works of the USO.”
